Scorecard: year 2, weeks 1–6
The past six weeks have flown by, and I don’t feel I have accomplished very much. I need to improve, stat!
Note: I started writing this entry at the end of Week 6, in early June. I then lost the text and several more weeks passed, so I wrote a (brief) new version, Scorecard: year 2, weeks 1–10. The below text wasn’t supposed to be final, but I’m just posting it as is.
I’ve continued spending substantial unplanned time on projects for the house and assorted computer projects, and I have not done well to stick to my schedule. The lack of weekly updates is evidence enough of the takeover of the procrastination mindset. Each weekend I pushed the weekly update till Monday, then Tuesday, and then till the following weekend. The more times I did this, the easier it got.
My scoring system is a little wonky this time around, for I have been trying to account for time spend on smaller projects in my total hours graphs, but I did not want to count this time the same as the programming projects time I scheduled. That time is supposed to be uninterrupted and deep. I therefore have marked a lot of my time for the past three weeks not as “projects” but as “personal”, which does not have a target number of hours, and thus didn’t count much toward my score. That’s why the score dropped from around 70 percent to around 30. The 70 was probably too high, and while the 30 is fair, it doesn’t mean I did nothing, but that I didn’t do what I planned.
I spent around 30 hours per week with friends, which is much more than planned and clearly cut into my productivity. I am still struggling to manage my social life, as I have trouble telling friends I can’t hang out because I failed to manage my other time effectively. I keep hoping I’ll get my act together on my own time, but I’ll need to make a compromise. I have also made more allowances recently in the spirit of enjoying my time away from work, but am wary of letting that mentality get out of control!
I of course won’t remember everything now regarding what worked and what didn’t, so I’ll just post the final weekly schedules below with some brief notes for that week.
