July gardening: Aphids and powdery mildew
July is when most of the squash started growing well, and I realized I planted way too much too close together. I also started getting powdery mildew on the pumpkins and aphids on the kale.
The many varieties of squash I transplanted are barely growing, but they are.
The zucchinis and cucumbers are barely growing also, probably due to not enough sun up here.
At least the beans are starting to climb where they can get some sun.
First grey peas I think. Not enough for a meal, but a nice snack!
I was excited about the first garbanzo beans, but then disappointed when I realized just one bean is produced in a pod. This is going to be a tiny harvest eventually!
First tomato flowers!
Not wanting to make a fourth garden bed in the back, I decided to try some large cloth pots in the front for the sweet potatoes, which I read grow fine in bags. I also have some strawberries growing, barely. I still don’t know where I want those to be.
The first garden bed is really full now. The afterthought pumpkins on the right half that I was just going to grow for greens are now getting big. I can’t bring myself to tear them out though! Ugh. The butternut and acorn squash on the right are growing huge leaves.
From the upper (second) garden bed, I have zucchino rampicante squash fruiting.
And my first zucchini!
Finally now the transplanted squash are growing larger leaves. I can see this is going to get crazy, and I planted things way too close.
I made a makeshift enclosure to keep the dogs away from the tomato pots, using the bricks I bought intending to use for my catio, if I ever get to it.

Garden status 2025-07-11: First garbanzo beans. I didn't realize there is just a single bean in a pod. So much work for this?!

Garden status 2025-07-17: I planted some strawberries as kind of an afterthought, as I never figured out where I wanted to put them and almost killed the ones I bought.

Garden status 2025-07-17: Potato bags to make use of space in the front, which is all concrete. I should just take out the concrete probably.
The kale are now getting aphids. It’s not a big deal, I just spray them off after harvest.
And now the pumpkins are getting powdery mildew. I read about this but am not really sure what to do about it.

Garden status 2025-07-29: Starting to get powdery mildew on the first pumpkins I planted. I'll have to research what to do.
