Emptying Big Girtha’s storage, scooting 12 miles
Well here we go: I’m blogging again. At least for today.
Now that I think my blog system is in roughly the shape I want to use for the next long term, I can create new posts without worrying about adding to the pile I need to migrate. But really I still have that problem, because I haven’t worked out how exactly I want to structure the source Markdown files and image folders. But that needn’t concern us today.
The other meta-point on my mind is what level of “personalness” I want to actually blog about. During the past almost two years of keeping a pretty minimal journal in Google docs, I wrote the pretty mundane things I did and included plenty of stuff I wouldn’t want to publish on a website (talking things like website logins, random troubleshooting notes and other irrelevant-to-others info). Now that I’ll try to shift some of that journaling to my blog again, I need to decide what to actually write about. In the past I had a mixture of “public posts” and “personal posts” that were all public, but some remained unlisted from the front page of my website. I’ll probably try to stick with that and see how it feels.
As for this post, it’s a brief summary of some things I did today, a day that was not too special, but happens to be the first about which I wrote anything in a while.
The final trip to my Burning Man camp’s storage
I got up and spent a couple hours mostly finishing moving shelves and stuff from the south to the north side of my two car garage.
When we moved here 1.5 years ago, we filled it up with everything from Alan’s Chinatown studio and my storage unit, which contained everything multiple generations of roommates left behind in my 4 bedroom Sunset apartment. I’ve been slowly getting it organized and separating out all the stuff I need to get rid of (and I’ve been too slow actually getting rid of the stuff).
I’ve made a few more pushes recently because I need to make space for getting a house battery and new electrical panel installed hopefully later this month. But this morning I rushed to actually finish, because I need to make space for more stuff!
My Burning Man camp Big Girtha decided to get rid of the storage unit — which is now in San Leandro about 15 minutes from my house. Caitlin and others have been getting rid on non-essentials for a while and already moved out a lot of stuff, but we’re distributing the last of it today.
I ended up taking the bike racks, two large bins and a large dusty rolled rug.
Scoot, run, scoot
Then after getting home and eating, I went for a run. Today was the first sunny day in a while, and dry after yesterday’s rain. I’ve been struggling to get my runs in lately because it gets dark before I finish work and it’s getting colder. I couldn’t miss the opportunity today.
As part of my run every road project, I have been planning runs that start at least several miles from my house. I used to bike to the start point, but lately I’ve barely been motivated to run far after biking.
Unrelated to my running, I had gotten Alan a Hiboy S2 electric scooter recently (October 19, $424.99 before tax, $468.55 total) so he could get to BART quicker in the morning before the 90 bus starts. That inspired me to look at getting a scooter for myself so we could go places together and not use the car or burn gas. Using the free electricity I have from my solar should pay off in the long run. I ended up getting a Hiboy Titan November 8 when it went on sale in the lead up to Black Friday. I paid $899.99 ($992.24 after tax), $100 more than it’s selling for today, but still $300 less than if I bought it a month prior!
Anyway, I used that scooter today to go to the furthest start point I tried so far, about 6 miles from home and up about 700 feet of incline. I did not like that the display said the battery was 1 or 2 bars of 5 the entire time, both on the way up and back down after the run. In total I went 12 miles, which is 46% of the advertised 26 mile range. Since that is an idealized max under low power, flat slope and a low weight rider, I probably can’t expect to go much further than I did today. I’ll need to test going a little bit further next time.
My Fitbit Sense registered the scooter journeys as automatically detected bicycle rides, which makes sense but is something I’ll need to watch for to delete them. Maybe I should disable autodetection, or Fitbit should learn that my heart rate is not increasing like it does when I am actually pedaling…
Then when I got home, I showered and then walked Remi with Alan, who then turned two ramen packets into some delicious soup. We ate while watching an episode of Hoarders (from Season 8). I need my inspiration till I empty the garage!
